THE CENTRAL ELECTION COMMITTEE OF THE REPUBLIC OF UZBEKISTAN

The Central Election Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan (then the Central Election Committee) shall be formed to organize and hold the election of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and members of the Senate, deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan and carries out its activities on a permanent basis.

As an independent body Central Electoral Commission has been functioning since 1989. Its functions and legal status are defined by the Law On the Central Election Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan as well as the laws On guarantees of citizens suffrage, On the elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, On the elections to the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, On referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan and others.

The Central Election Committee shall be guided in its activity by the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, laws on the elections and referendum of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and other legislative acts.

Fundamental principles in the activity of the Central Election Committee shall be legality, collective nature, publicity, independence and justice. The Central Election Committee shall be summoned up by all its activity to promote the implementation of democratic principles of the electoral system, and to ensure environment to express voters free will.

The Central Election Committee shall be formed by the Oliy Majlis composed of not less than fifteen members. Members of the Central Election Committee shall be elected by the Oliy Majlis on the recommendation of the Jokarghy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provincial and Tashkent city Kenghashes of Peoples Deputies.

Chairman of the Central Election Committee shall be elected from among its members upon presentation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan at meeting of the committee. Deputy Chairman and Secretary of the Central Election Committee shall be elected from among members of the Committee.

Member of the Central Election Committee may not be member of another electoral committee or political party. Member of the Central Election Committee, registered, in accordance with the Law, as candidate for the election to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as candidate to the deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, as candidate to member of the Senate, as a proxy, shall be considered as withdrawn from the Committee.

Member of the Central Election Committee, by its decision, may work at the Committee on a permanent basis.
