“Huge work carried out to strengthen democracy”
26.12.2009
Over 270 observers from foreign states and international organizations will monitor the elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan. UzA correspondents spoke to some of them to learn their opinion on the election campaign.

Sin Guanchen, director of the Institute for study of remote regions of China’s Social sciences academy:

“Elections are a large historical and political event for any country. I was an observer at 2007 Presidential elections in Uzbekistan. Elections in your country are being held on a multi-party and alternative basis, which proves that in Uzbekistan a democratic state has been formed and the election system fully complies with the international norms.

“Of a special importance is the fact that 15 deputies at the present elections will be elected from the Environmental movement. This should contribute to the improvement of the laws related to the environment.

“China is paying a particular attention to development of cooperation with the countries of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan. I am convinced that relations between our countries will continue developing and our friendly ties will grow stronger.”

Santappu Radhakrishnan, Honorary secretary of ASEAN legal association (Malaysia):

“I participated in the parliamentary elections in 2004 and Presidential elections in 2007 as an observer. I monitored the election processes in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.

“The candidates to deputies of the Legislative Chamber had equal opportunities to use mass media during their election campaigns. It is also important that there are many women among them.

“All conditions have been created for observers to monitor the election process. I saw this while visiting some of the voting stations in your capital. Those who cannot visit polling stations due to their health can have polling boxes brought to their homes, which gives each voter the opportunity to use their right to vote.”
