MEDIA SIGN AGREEMENT ON ELECTIONS COVERAGE
The Central Election Commission and the National TV and radio company, as well as the Journalists’ creative union and the Independent press and news agencies support fund signed agreements on coverage of the parliamentary election campaign in Uzbekistan.
As reported earlier, the elections to the Legislative Chamber of the
Oliy Majlis and the regional, district and city people’s deputies
councils will be held in December.
Parliamentary election campaign to start on 22 September
The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a regular meeting on 17 September, which was headed by commission chairman Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov. The constitutional term of office of the Oliy Majlis (parliament), as well as regional, district and city deputies’ councils expire in December this year.
ELECTIONS: ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY INSTITUTIONS IN THE FORMATION OF REPRESENTATIVE BODIES
An international round table “Civil society institutions and elections to representative government bodies” took place in Samarqand.
It was organized by the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Institute for the Study of Civil Society, Ecology Movement of Uzbekistan, Fund Mahalla jointly with the National Democratic Institute, U.S., and Office of OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan.
CENTRAL ELECTION COMMISSION
On September 17, the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a regular meeting headed by its chairman, Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalomov.
As it is known, the term of powers of Oliy Majlis, regional, district and city Kengashes (Councils) of People’s Deputies expires in December this year.
In accordance with the second part of Article 117 of the Constitution,
elections to the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, representative and
state bodies of regions, districts, cities should be held on the first
Sunday of the third decade of December, i.e. on December 27, 2009.

Elections system of Uzbekistan in experts’ spotlight
Legal aspects of publicity, openness and transparency in and of elections, international experience, norms and standards, have been discussed at an international seminar held in Bukhara.
Within the two-day forum participants analyzed the country’s experience in the development of legislative framework and practices of ensuring openness and transparency in election campaigns, the role and participation of civil society institutions in democratic elections. It was noted that the country carries on a systematic and consistent democratization of electoral legislation and electoral practices, develops essencial environment for ensuring open and free elections. Quite important a role here falls on the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan (CEC), civil society institutions and mass media.

ELECTIONS BASED ON LAW AND MAIN PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY
International conference “International Standards of Holding Democratic Elections and the Electoral Legislation of Uzbekistan” has been organized in Tashkent.
During the two-day work, experts discussed a wide range of issues, but the main subject of discussion was the experience of Uzbekistan in implementation of international electoral standards into the national legislative base as well as the practice of organizing and holding elections to representative bodies.
