Second round of parliamentary elections to be held on 10 January

The Central Election Commission held a session on 30 December to
consider the preliminary results of the elections of the Legislative
Chamber and the holding second round of elections in separate districts.
In his speech, the CEC chairman
Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said the elections had been held in full
accordance with democratic principles of openness, and foreign
observers had been provided with all conditions for their activity.
A
total of 96 deputies of the parliament’s lower house were elected from
135 election districts. In 39 districts, none of the candidates
received the required number of votes for election.
In accordance with the article 45 of the Law on Elections to Oliy Majlis, the CEC issued a resolution on holding the second round of elections in separate districts.
The resolution states that the second round of elections will be held on 10 January 2010.
In
line with the legislation, in the second round, two candidates that
have received the largest number of votes during the main elections
will participate in each district.
The candidate that receives the largest number of votes in the second round will be considered elected.
The candidates can hold their pre-election campaigns and use the mass media in the order established by the CEC in their respective districts.
The CEC
approved the program of events related to preparation and conduction of
the second round of elections in separate election districts.
